Novo Nordisk Shares Drop 8% Despite Ambitious Sales Target for Obesity Drugs

Novo Nordisk's stock fell by 8.1% after the company announced a $23 billion sales target for its obesity drugs by 2035, failing to reassure investors amid increasing competition. CEO Mike Doustdar acknowledged significant challenges ahead, particularly related to the impending loss of patent exclusivity for its key drug, semaglutide.
Stock Decline Amid Concerns
Novo Nordisk's shares dropped 8.1% during afternoon trading on Monday, marking one of the company's worst days since February. Investors expressed concerns that the company's newly outlined long-term goals did not adequately address competition in the weight loss market, which Novo helped pioneer.
Ambitious Sales Goals
The Danish pharmaceutical company aims to launch over five drugs with potential blockbuster sales by 2030, targeting more than 150 billion Danish kroner (approximately $23 billion) in risk-adjusted pipeline sales by 2035. However, the announcement did not alleviate investor fears regarding the competitive landscape.
Patent Expiration and Market Competition
CEO Mike Doustdar highlighted a critical issue during the Capital Markets Day in London: the patent for semaglutide, the active ingredient in its popular weight-loss and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, is set to expire in 2032. This expiration raises concerns about price pressures and market share as competitors enter the space. Doustdar emphasized the need for Novo to prepare for increased competition from other pharmaceutical companies.
Strategic Shifts and Future Plans
In response to market challenges, Novo is shifting its strategy to diversify its portfolio beyond obesity and diabetes. Doustdar indicated plans to expand into blood and endocrine disorders, liver diseases, and cardiovascular conditions. The company's strategy has evolved from a focus on core therapy areas to a broader approach aimed at sustaining growth in a competitive environment.
Despite these initiatives, analysts have noted that the growth targets presented do not align with the expectations investors have historically held for Novo. Earlier in August, the company projected a 6% decline in adjusted sales and operating profit for 2026, raising further concerns about its future trajectory.
