Alibaba Shares Rise Following AI Chip and Data Center Expansion Announcement

New AI Chip
The tech giant introduced the Zhenwu V900, its next-generation AI chip, which reportedly delivers three times the performance of the earlier Zhenwu M890, launched in May. Mass production and commercial release of the Zhenwu V900 are anticipated in the first quarter of 2027.
Data Center Expansion Plans
In addition to the new chip, Alibaba plans to enhance its cloud infrastructure by expanding its global data center capacity to over 20 gigawatts by 2032. This initiative is part of a wider strategy that includes investments in chips, cloud services, and AI models.
Competitive Landscape
Alibaba's move comes amid a growing focus on AI infrastructure, with competitors like Nvidia and Meta also ramping up their investments in this area. Nvidia recently announced plans to support up to 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure in Australia by 2027, while Meta is developing a major data center in Canada.
CEO Eddie Wu emphasized the vast potential for growth in AI, comparing the current landscape to the early days of electrification. He stated that AI coding represents a pivotal advancement in machine intelligence.
