Binance Under Investigation for Potential Sanctions Violations

U.S. federal prosecutors are investigating Binance for allegedly allowing users to bypass sanctions on Iran. The probe is being conducted by the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office in collaboration with the Justice Department's criminal division.

Investigation Details

U.S. federal prosecutors in Manhattan are examining whether Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, violated sanctions against Iran. The investigation focuses on whether Binance failed to curtail certain trading activities on its platform, allowing users to circumvent U.S. sanctions.

Compliance Efforts

A spokesperson for Binance stated that the company maintains a zero-tolerance policy for sanctions violations and is fully cooperating with law enforcement. Binance has previously faced scrutiny from U.S. authorities, including a guilty plea for banking compliance violations in 2023, resulting in a $4.3 billion fine. The company has emphasized that 25% of its global workforce is dedicated to compliance efforts.

Past Allegations

The investigation follows accusations from U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal regarding potential sanctions violations amounting to $1.7 billion. Binance has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that it has not facilitated transactions involving sanctioned individuals. In March, the company also filed a defamation lawsuit against Dow Jones after a report suggested that the Justice Department was probing Binance for facilitating funds for Iran in violation of sanctions.

Ongoing Concerns

In addition to the current investigation, reports have surfaced indicating that Binance made it more challenging for law enforcement to access user information, raising concerns about its compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. Despite these issues, Binance continues to assert its commitment to working with authorities and preventing illicit activities on its platform.
